New Canaan
A small, charming New England town of about 19,000 residents, New Canaan, Connecticut, is located northeast of Stamford, and a few miles inland from Long Island Sound. The town covers a little more than 20 square miles filled with pastoral country roads, rustic stone walls and majestic old trees. In the town center, you'll find an eclectic mix of cafes, restaurants, boutiques and antique shops. Points of interest also include God's Acres and the New Canaan Historical Society.
A half-dozen parks offer about 400 acres of natural space and recreational facilities. The largest of these, Waverny Park, covers 300 acres and offers paddle/tennis courts, volleyball courts, softball/baseball fields, soccer fields and walking/jogging trails. The 40-acre Bliss Park is home to the New Canaan Nature Center, which preserves natural live animal habitats and offers a number of educational programs, including horticultural classes and programs on apple cidering and maple sugaring.
New Canaan also supports a strong cultural community, with the Town Players of New Canaan offering theater productions and the Silvermine Guild Arts Center promoting visual and performing arts. The New Canaan Public Schools district includes one high school, one middle school and three elementary schools.
New Canaan is close enough to New York City to commute to work, or for day trips to the city. By road, it's about 40 miles or by express train, it's about one hour and six minutes.
